Friends of the Westfield Library

The Friends of the Westfield Library (FOWL) is an organization designed to promote and support the mission of the Westfield Washington Public Library. Through its fundraising efforts, primarily book sales held every other month, and our Annual Craft Bazaar and Silent Auction, the group raises money used to fund library programs and to purchase items that are not in the library's operating budget.

How Can You Help the Friends?

Become a member - Your dues support our mission and your ideas are the key to our success. Members enjoy benefits of up to 40% off of new books ordered through the Friends, 10% off of Friends merchandise (used books and tote bags), a copy of the monthly "Links" newsletter mailed to you and the option to shop at the members only preview of each book sale.

Assist with Craft Bazaar & Silent Auction - Each October the Friends host an Annual Craft Bazaar & Silent Auction as our main fundraiser for the library. This exciting event offers many different areas in which we need volunteers. Whether you enjoy event planning, making contact with local businesses, or publicizing the event to the Westfield community, we can use your talents!

Silent Auction: Volunteers are needed to solicit donations for our silent auction from local businesses and community partners. Call or visit the local businesses that you frequent and ask for a donation to the Friends of the Library. Help to identify big-ticket raffle items that will bring in funding to support the library.

Publicity: Meet with other members of the Friends group to distribute signs and flyers in the community. Promote the Friends of the Westfield Library and the Craft Bazaar to any groups of which you are a member, including churches, social groups, and neighborhood associations.

Craft Bazaar Event Volunteers: Join the excitement as we prepare for the event by setting up, welcoming craft vendors, and monitoring the Silent Auction.

Help with Book Sales - The Friends organize book sales as a primary fundraiser for the library. Volunteers are needed to help set up and/or tear down the sales, and to serve as cashiers during operating hours. There are also opportunities to volunteer between sales to organize the weeded and donated books that make up the inventory.

Serve on the Board of Directors - The Friends Board of Directors meets eight times a year (every month except Dec, Jan, March and April) to discuss business matters, vote on expenditures, and plan fundraising events. All members are welcome to attend and any member is eligible to hold office.

Donate Resources - We accept gently used books, DVDs and CDs which may be added to the library's collection or sold in the book sale. Recycling your donated cell phones aslo helps bring in additional funds.

Sponsor a Magazine - For an average of $15 (depending on title) you can sponsor a magazine for an entire year. Whether there is a specific title we don't carry that you would like to share or you just want to support one of your favorites, feel free to contact us about sponsorship. Special thanks to the following donors for supporting these subscriptions:

Idamae Adams - Bird Watcher's Digest
Jeanette Wachtel - Mothering
Anonymous - Utne
Sandy Rowland - Equus
